Face Like a Horse

When I first wrote this song, I remember playing it for my friend Randy over the phone, when I was still attending school at the University of Iowa in 1991. I sang phonetic nonsense; lyrics usually come last. So there are few songs older than this one, with the possible exception of "Jubilation." The lyrics came eight years later when we recorded the song for this album, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it wound up on an eight-track recording in a different version some time in the mid-'90s. I just don't remember for sure. The woman with a face like a horse, in reality, is not Veronica; on the contrary, she is one of the nicest women I ever met during my few years in Iowa City. God only knows where she is now. I remember she and I found a Duran Duran board game without the instructions, so we made up our own rules. The object of the game was to sleep with every member of the band. I forget who won, but I'm a pretty aggressive competitor.

Veronica's car is like a disease
Her hand on the stick
She's parked behind the trees
That circle the house
Where her sister was born
October the fourth

A husband and wife
With six hundred kids
Dissolved in a glass
Fingers clutching at her lips
Slicked up with the lime
You could pour on a corpse
With a face like a horse

Their love is like cake
Cut four hundred ways
Four hundred and one
Bite down and salivate
The sugar is strong
Never mind how it tastes
Smear it over you face

Face like a horse
(it's no one's fault)
Wants a divorce
That really hurts
Stuck in reverse

Soup kitchen face
(it's all or nothing)
Latex and lace
Freaked out and sharp
Four months in hell

Don't hang up the phone
Turn out all the lights
And lay back in bed
Concentrate on my voice
I'm telling you lies
You'll never forgive
I'm telling you lies
