about

I wanted this tune to be a short linear pop song with no verse-chorus cycle, but have the lyrics be all about the circularity and repetition of pop music. How we listen something to death. I listen to my favorite songs until they become the white noise made by synapses firing, echoing as I think about anything. That's the point when I abandon the song. This has recently happened with a lot of New Pornographers' songs, because I love their music so much, I have essentially killed it. I don't hear it anymore. This also happens when you record music. You listen to something over and over again, scrutinize it microscopically, and then suddenly you hear absolutely nothing.

I remember this song coming together very quickly in rehearsal, which is a little unusual for us. It is my favorite bass line from the CD, and I remember being pretty proud of what I thought was a sort of McCartney-esque quality it had in the end section.

lyrics

I'm not done
I have more to say before the chorus comes
straight ahead
don't look back
back and forth is such a bore

Chorus, bridge, verse and solo
stringing hooks along the shoreline
until you score

One more time
let me hear the song
that makes the hair rise on my arms

The radio's on
the supermarket parking lot
you wait for the song to turn around
