about

I first heard the lyrics to this tune the day we started tracking the vocals... they really made the tune for me, I loved them immediately. Greg and Kelly often sing nonsensical syllables until we get around to tracking the vocals. This was the first vocal we tracked on YHE, and we tracked Greg's vocals first (in Kelly's garage, for some weird reason). After trying about 8 mics, we settled on one to use for Greg... the very unlikely D112, a large diaphragm dynamic usually used on kick drums. For some reason, it sounded better that a bunch of other "better" mics (though I am not sure Scott, our mix engineer agreed), and we used it for the whole CD . We later tracked Kelly's vocal at the Monolith's studio "Palace Recording", with an AT4060 tube mic we borrowed for the remainder of the recording. We ran both the D112 and the AT4060 through a neve preamp from an old broadcast board. Unless you are a nerd like me, that is more than you could possibly want to know.

When you see Miriam Hopkins' eyes brighten in Ernst Lubitsch's The Smiling Lieutenant, you immediately fall in love. Then you have to watch Maurice Chevalier roll his eyes five hundred times, a "comic" expression he kept up throughout his career, including the lamentable Gigi, in which Maurice gets to sing about the joys of pedophilia.

lyrics

Tell me a story that ends with a gunshot
A smack to the side of the head
Please don't divulge all the details that bore us
Just skip to the end

Whittle him down to a splinter of dignity
Eyes with a shade of mascara she smeared on him
I wanna walk back home holding the hand of a-
I wanna walk back with her

Oh, what did I say, you cannot survive my curse
Once you lay down here

Why don't you take me away

Oh, with a twist on his sore little headstand
He fell for the pleasure of children who baited him
They didn't smile at his skill as an acrobat
Only to laugh as he slipped and upset
All the flowers arranged in a dirty milk bottle
He kept by the portrait of Miriam Hopkins
The smiling lieutenant's adorable suitor
He heard her sing Clair De La Lune
