Elephant

about

My idea for this song was to replicate a transcript of a fighter pilot and his crew on the ground. I love the symbolism and cryptic language of the military, of these close knit units that rely on each other for their lives. Talking in code seems so poetic somehow. Anyway, in this story bad things transpire.

Kelly and I had a short, fruitful run of writing quiet songs together; it was back when we were... well, you know. Our two years of dalliance were fun, thrilling, and, yes, sometimes it sucked, but I'll always have fond memories of this songwriting period, as short-lived as it was. This and Aquarium Song are a couple of those tunes written at that time. Some are, sadly, long lost, not recorded, forgotten; I regret that more than anything. They're unlike other 20ML stuff, deadly when played live, so we never do. But I think if we reworked the tunes into livelier arrangements, both of these songs could come across really well on stage.

lyrics

Alpha double seven
three five nine
Fixed on target over
please stand by
Forecast warning
warning storming
Come on back
Elephant moves slowly
Roger that
Holy shit sir
it's a Stukka
Changing course
Expiration noted
Over
